How to Calculate Salary Hike Percentage

Salary hike percentage shows how much your compensation increases compared with your current salary. The formula is simple: hike percentage equals hike amount divided by current salary, multiplied by 100. For example, if your current annual CTC is Rs 6,00,000 and your new CTC is Rs 6,90,000, the hike amount is Rs 90,000. Rs 90,000 divided by Rs 6,00,000 equals 0.15, so the hike is 15%.

This calculator works in the other direction too. You enter current CTC and hike percentage, and it calculates the new CTC, annual hike amount, new monthly gross, estimated monthly tax, PF deduction, and monthly in-hand salary. That helps you understand the actual bank-account impact instead of only looking at the headline hike percentage.

What is a Good Salary Hike in India?

A good salary hike depends on your role, industry, company performance, market demand, and current salary level. In many Indian corporate roles, a regular annual increment around 5% to 10% may be considered moderate. A 10% to 15% hike is generally good because it tends to stay ahead of inflation and shows solid performance recognition. A 15% to 25% hike is excellent, and a 25% or higher hike is often associated with promotions, role changes, retention adjustments, or job switches.

However, the same percentage can feel different at different income levels. A 10% hike on Rs 3,00,000 CTC is very different from a 10% hike on Rs 30,00,000 CTC. The real question is how much extra in-hand money you receive every month after tax and statutory deductions.

How Salary Hike Affects Your In-Hand Salary

Your CTC hike does not fully convert into monthly in-hand salary. Some of the increase may go into tax, PF-linked salary components, professional tax, employer-side benefits, or variable pay depending on your company structure. This page uses a common simplified salary structure: basic salary, HRA, special allowance, employee PF, professional tax, standard deduction, and income tax under the selected regime.

As your income rises, your taxable income may enter higher slabs. This is why a 20% CTC hike may produce a smaller percentage increase in take-home salary. The calculator shows monthly increase and effective monthly raise after tax so you can see the practical impact clearly.

Salary Hike vs Inflation in India

Inflation reduces purchasing power. If prices rise by around 5% to 6% in a year and your salary increases by only 3%, your real purchasing power may go down even though your salary number increased. That is why this calculator compares your hike against an approximate India inflation benchmark of 5% to 6%.

A hike below inflation can feel like a pay cut in real terms. A hike that roughly matches inflation helps you maintain purchasing power. A hike above 10% generally provides real improvement, especially if your rent, EMIs, and daily expenses are stable. The industry-average comparison helps you judge whether your raise is below, near, or above typical increment expectations.

FAQ

Does hike percentage apply to CTC or in-hand salary?

Most companies calculate hike on CTC or fixed compensation. In-hand salary changes after tax and deductions, so it may increase less than the CTC percentage.

Why is my monthly in-hand increase lower than expected?

Higher income can increase tax liability. PF, professional tax, and salary structure also affect the final monthly take-home.

Which tax regime should I choose?

This tool lets you switch old and new regime estimates. Final selection should be based on your actual deductions, exemptions, and latest filing rules.

Is 15% a good salary hike?

In many Indian roles, 15% is an excellent increment because it is meaningfully above inflation and typical annual appraisal ranges.

Can I use this for offer comparison?

Yes, it is useful for quick offer and appraisal analysis. For final decisions, compare full salary breakup, variable pay, benefits, and tax declarations.
