What this notice-period calculator does

This tool estimates a last working day from the information you enter. It supports two common counting approaches: calendar days, which move through every date, and working days, which skip the selected weekly off days and any exact holiday dates supplied. It also allows counting to begin on the resignation date or the following day.

The result is a planning aid, not an HR approval or legal conclusion. The governing employment agreement, appointment letter, certified standing orders, workplace policy, accepted resignation and applicable law can all affect the final date. Always obtain written confirmation before committing to a new joining date.

How date counting works

First, the calculator subtracts waived or bought-out days from the contractual requirement. For calendar-day notice, it counts consecutive dates. For working-day notice, it counts only dates that are not excluded as weekly off days or listed holidays. When the “same day” option is selected, the resignation date can be day one; otherwise counting begins the next day.

Notice days to serve = contractual notice days − approved waived or bought-out days

The calendar span is the number of dates from submission through the estimated last day under the chosen start convention. The following calendar date is shown as an earliest planning date, but it is not automatically a valid joining date if the new employer, existing employer or law imposes another condition.

Calendar days versus working days

Appointment letters often state a number of days or months without describing every counting detail. Calendar-day counting normally includes weekends and holidays. Working-day counting excludes defined non-working dates, so the same numerical requirement can end much later. A notice described in months may also be treated differently from a fixed number of days.

Do not assume that office closure changes calendar notice. Similarly, do not assume leave automatically reduces notice. Use the wording in your documents and ask HR how resignation date, weekends, company holidays, leave and final settlement are handled.

Using the holiday input

Holiday dates matter only when working-day mode is selected. Enter exact dates in YYYY-MM-DD format, separated by commas. A holiday that already falls on an excluded weekend has no additional effect. The tool ignores invalid entries and dates outside the calculated path.

Company holidays can differ by office, shift and region. Use the calendar that applies to the employee rather than a generic public-holiday list. If the organisation works alternate Saturdays or follows a roster, this simplified tool may not reproduce that schedule accurately.

Notice waiver and buyout

A waiver means the employer agrees that some contractual notice need not be served. A buyout may involve payment for unserved time, but approval, formula, salary components, tax and recovery method depend on the applicable terms. Enter only days that have been or are expected to be formally waived.

The buyout output multiplies waived days by monthly salary divided by the selected divisor. It does not determine which salary components count. Some policies may use basic salary, gross fixed pay or another definition. It also excludes tax, leave adjustment, bonus, gratuity, asset recovery and other final-settlement items.

A practical resignation timeline

  1. Read the appointment letter, amendments and current HR policy.
  2. Submit resignation through the required channel and keep acknowledgement.
  3. Confirm whether counting begins immediately or on the next date.
  4. Ask whether the rule uses calendar days, working days or complete months.
  5. Discuss leave, holidays, waiver and buyout in writing.
  6. Obtain an approved last working day before confirming another joining date.
  7. Complete handover, asset return and final-settlement documentation.

Why the employer's confirmed date can differ

An employer may interpret the start date differently, reject or partially approve waiver, extend service for unauthorised absence, adjust leave according to policy or use a month-based rule. The accepted resignation date may differ from the date an email was drafted. Role-specific handover or regulated responsibilities may also require additional steps.

If there is disagreement with financial or legal consequences, preserve relevant documents and obtain advice appropriate to the jurisdiction and employment category. A generic calculator cannot determine coverage under a particular labour statute or standing order.

Common mistakes

  • Adding the notice number without checking whether the first date is included.
  • Confusing 90 days with three calendar months.
  • Skipping weekends when the contract actually states calendar days.
  • Assuming planned leave automatically counts as notice served.
  • Entering waiver before it is approved.
  • Using total CTC as the buyout salary without checking the policy formula.
  • Promising a new joining date before receiving written release confirmation.

Methodology and limitations

The calculator uses local calendar arithmetic and the selected weekend pattern. It does not model alternate Saturdays, shifts, partial days, timezone cut-offs, complete-month rules, leave policy, garden leave, probation terms or jurisdiction-specific law. Holiday dates are user supplied. Inputs stay in the browser.

India's official standing-orders framework includes termination and notice among regulated employment matters for covered establishments and categories, but applicability and current rules require specific review. The Ministry of Labour and Employment publishes relevant labour-code and standing-order materials. This page is not legal advice.

Frequently asked questions

Is the resignation date day one?

It depends on the agreement and accepted practice. Use the start selector to compare both conventions and confirm the employer's position.

Does leave reduce notice?

Not automatically. Some policies allow adjustment, some extend the date and others require approval. Enter waived days only when appropriate.

Can notice be bought out?

That depends on contract, policy and employer approval. The calculator only estimates an amount using your selected salary divisor.

Why does working-day mode end much later?

Because excluded weekly offs and listed holidays do not count toward the required working days.

Is the next date guaranteed as a joining date?

No. It is shown for planning after the estimated last day. Obtain release confirmation and satisfy the new employer's requirements.

Are resignation details stored?

No. The calculation runs locally. Standard analytics and advertising are described in the Privacy Policy.
