Split bills and collect by UPI

Bill Splitter & UPI Generator

Split a restaurant, trip, cafe, or house party bill in seconds. Add GST/tax, add a tip, override one person's share if needed, and generate UPI payment requests for everyone.

The Bill

Tax is added on the bill amount, then tip is added. Leave tax/tip as 0 if already included.

The People

Leave override blank for equal split. Add an amount only when someone should pay a fixed share.

How to Split Bills Fairly

Splitting a bill fairly starts with agreeing what counts as the shared amount. In most restaurant or cafe situations, the total includes food, drinks, service charge, GST, and sometimes a tip. If the bill already includes GST and service charge, enter the final amount and keep tax and tip as zero. If you only have the base bill amount, add the GST or tip separately so everyone sees the full payable total.

Equal split is the fastest option when everyone consumed roughly the same amount. But real life is rarely perfect. One friend may have ordered a larger meal, another may have skipped drinks, and someone may have paid for dessert separately. That is why this bill splitter lets you override a person's amount. For example, if Rahul should pay ₹500, enter ₹500 in his override field. The app then divides the remaining balance equally among everyone without a fixed override.

This approach avoids awkward manual math and keeps the logic transparent. The final cards show exactly what each person owes, so there is less confusion in group chats.

Why Bill Splitting is an Art in India

Bill splitting in India is more than arithmetic. It happens after group dinners, chai tapri rounds, office lunches, hostel food orders, road trips, birthday treats, movie plans, and late-night cafe visits. The familiar "who is paying?" debate can start before the waiter even brings the bill. Sometimes one person pays to keep things moving, then everyone settles later. Sometimes the group wants an exact split because one person had only chai while another ordered a full meal.

UPI has made repayment easier, but the mental math is still annoying. You may need to add GST, service charge, tip, delivery fee, convenience fee, and then divide everything across people. Equal split works when everyone consumed roughly the same amount. Itemized split works better when orders are very different. A good bill splitter removes the awkwardness by making the calculation visible and easy to share.

How do UPI Deep Links Work?

A UPI deep link is a special payment URL that opens a UPI app on supported phones. The link starts with upi://pay and includes details such as the receiver's UPI ID, receiver name, amount, and currency. When your friend taps the Pay via UPI button, their phone can open apps like Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, BHIM, or bank UPI apps, depending on what is installed.

The generated link includes your host UPI ID and that person's calculated share. The friend still has to review and approve the payment in their UPI app. MiniUtils does not process payments, store UPI IDs, or move money. Everything is generated inside the browser from the values you enter.

UPI Bill Splitting: The Indian Way

UPI transformed bill splitting because repayment no longer depends on cash change or bank account details. The person who paid can request money on PhonePe, Google Pay, Paytm, BHIM, WhatsApp Payments, or a bank UPI app. A UPI ID such as name@bank or mobile@upi is enough to collect money, and QR code scanning works well when everyone is physically present.

For remote settlement, UPI links are more convenient than QR codes. A payment link can be sent on WhatsApp with the exact amount and note already filled. The payer still reviews and approves the transaction inside their app, so the process remains controlled by the payer. Some apps include built-in split bill features, but a browser-based calculator is useful when the group uses different UPI apps or when you want a simple shareable calculation before sending requests.

Tips for Fair Bill Splitting

Split equally when the order was shared or the difference between people is small. Use itemized or fixed shares when one person ordered significantly more, skipped drinks, joined late, or paid separately for one item. For group travel, keep categories clear: fuel, tolls, hotel, snacks, tickets, and emergency expenses. A messy trip bill becomes easier when every amount has a category and payer.

Set expectations before the bill arrives. If the group knows that drinks, desserts, or expensive add-ons will be separate, nobody feels surprised later. For people who often forget to pay, send a clear WhatsApp message with the exact amount and UPI link. Apps like Splitwise are useful for long-running groups, but a manual bill splitter is faster for one-time meals, short trips, and office lunch collections.

FAQ

Does this tool collect payments automatically?

No. It only creates UPI payment links and WhatsApp request text. The actual payment is approved by the payer inside their own UPI app.

How do I split a bill with tip included?

Enter the base bill amount and add the tip separately, or enter the final payable amount with tip already included and keep the tip field at zero.

What if someone ordered significantly more than others?

Use the fixed amount override for that person. The tool will divide the remaining balance among the rest of the group.

How does UPI bill splitting work?

One person pays the bill, calculates each person's share, and sends UPI payment links or requests. Each friend approves their own payment in a UPI app.

Can I track who has paid and who hasn't?

This page calculates shares and creates payment requests, but it does not track payment status. For long trips, keep a separate note or use an expense tracking app.

What is the easiest way to split bills in a group?

For simple meals, equal split is fastest. For mixed orders, use fixed overrides for special cases and split the rest equally.

How to handle bill splitting for road trips?

Record each shared expense as it happens, keep receipts or screenshots, and settle category-wise at the end using UPI links for each person's final share.

What happens if fixed override amounts are more than the bill?

The tool shows a warning because the split is no longer valid. Reduce one of the override amounts or increase the bill total.

Can I use this for trips and shared expenses?

Yes. It works for any shared expense where one person is collecting payments from others, including meals, cab rides, snacks, party supplies, or short trips.
